Simple, Elegant, Entirely Them: An Intimate Wedding at Brookdale Wine Estate
There is a particular quiet that settles over a Cape estate in the late afternoon, when the light turns to honey and the mountains soften at their edges. It was into this hour that Meghan and Michael married, on the lawns of a gracious manor house at Brookdale Wine Estate, surrounded by only their closest family and friends.
A Manor House at the Edge of the Winelands
The setting asked for very little embellishment. A whitewashed Cape Dutch homestead, all graceful gables and thatch, presides over formal box-hedge gardens, with vineyards and forested slopes falling away towards the mountains beyond. The couple exchanged their vows on the lawn before the house, the estate doing much of the work that elaborate staging so often tries, and fails, to imitate.

A Wedding Made to Reflect Them
University sweethearts, Meghan and Michael had been certain of one thing from the start: the day should be a true reflection of them. Not a wedding borrowed from a magazine, but something simple, elegant, and quietly their own — with just enough mischief to feel unmistakably like the two of them.

Beautiful bridal moments
An Outdoor Reception
Rather than raise a marquee, we set the reception beneath the estate’s existing vine-clad pergola, a living roof of wisteria and greenery that needed no improvement. A single long table ran its length, dressed in soft eucalyptus-green linen. Above it we suspended a constellation of white petal-form lanterns, their shapes opening like blossoms, so that as the sun dropped the whole pergola seemed lit from within.
In the Detail
Down the centre of the table ran a low, loose meadow of pastel blooms — powder-blue delphinium, blush and butter-cream roses, lilac clematis, white cosmos and lace — chosen to echo the indigenous landscape and to look, for all the world, as though they had been gathered that morning from the surrounding veld. Slender tapers and marbled pillar candles were threaded between them, ready for the moment the light began to fade.

Garden-inspired wedding flowers
It is in the smaller decisions that a couple truly appears, and Meghan and Michael wanted theirs in the detail. In place of plain white crockery, black-and-white striped side plates brought a note of wit to each setting. In place of ordinary napkins, fine linen finished with a black hem-stitch. Small departures, but together they gave the table a character entirely its own — composed, but never quite predictable.
The most tender touch belonged to the two members of the family who could not attend. Meghan and Michael’s beloved dogs were painted in delicate watercolour and woven through the stationery, presiding, among other things, over a pair of signature cocktails named in their honour. A small, made-for-them detail, and a quietly moving one — a way of bringing the whole household to the celebration.

Magical Moments
At the table, the menu was placed in the hands of an award-winning chef, who answered the setting with a seasonal Winelands menu: each course considered, generous, and matched to the estate’s own cellar. It was cooking that asked for no introduction, and the kind of meal a small gathering can truly linger over.
And in the spirit of a day that never took itself too seriously, dessert arrived as a single heart-shaped wedding cake — unabashedly romantic, and entirely them.
Until the Stars Came Out
As evening came, the celebration moved to the water. The timber deck around the swimming pool became bar and dance floor both, ringed by the dark shapes of the mountains. There, beneath a sky thick with stars, Meghan and Michael and their small circle danced late into the Winelands night.
It was never going to be a large wedding. It was only ever meant to be theirs — and in every considered, characterful detail, it was.
